Gender and Elections workshop for the media is scheduled for 2-6 April 2012 in Port Moresby in preparation for June general elections

The workshop will be organized in partnership with UNDP Georgia and the Central Electoral Commission of Georgia. It will run in two parallel sessions in Russian and English and will focus on gender aspect of electoral administration  and mainstreaming gender throughout the electoral cycle.

IFES/Egypt, in cooperation with the American University in Cairo, will be conducting a BRIDGE workshop on Elections and Gender from January 22-24, 2012 in Cairo.

A first of its kind weeklong BRIDGE Gender and Elections workshop aimed to gender sensitize Voter Registration Coordinators (RCs), Registration Officers (ROs) and Assistant Registration Officers (AROs) for three SANMA Province constituencies of Santo, Malo/Aore and Luganville before registration commenced in preparation for October 2012 General Elections The workshop, partnership of UN Women Gender Equality in Political Governance Programme–GEPG and the Vanuatu Electoral Commission and Office was attended by 30 participants comprising 18 men and 12 women. Only one of the 12 women is a Voter Registration Coordinator while 11 others are active ROs and AROs.

UN Women will be conducting a BRIDGE Gender & Election Module in Makira-Ulawa Province from 11th -15th July 2011.  The venue will be at the Provincial capital of Makira-Ulawa Province– Kirakira.  Facilitators for the workshop will include Ms Josephine Teakeni (Workshop Facilitator), Ms Jessica Ngere (Semi-accredited), Ms Marolyn Misitana (semi-accredited) and myself.  Target participants include Makira-Ulawa provincial members, civil servants, community leaders, youth and women leaders and church leaders.

The workshop will be reflecting on how temporary special measures, such as elected reserved seats in parliament, voluntary party quotas and other forms of affirmative action may assist Bouganville in achieving an improved gender balance in the national parliament. Parliamentarians are also introduced to the principles of different electoral systems and how they affect women’s representation, as well as to the needs for respective voter education. The workshop is led by BRIDGE accrediting facilitator Bolenga (Vanuatu) and Leotina Harihiru (accrediting facilitator) of Solomon Islands while the workshop facilitator is Hamidan Bibi from Fiji.  There are five co-facilitators from Bouganville who were recently accredited after a Train the Facilitators workshop two weeks ago. The co-facilitators include Agnes Titus, Steven Simiha, Lawrence Chicka, Patricia Kapapal and Ezekiel Lames. The workshop starts at 8am today (Monday 13th June) at Kuri Resort, Buka and ends on Friday 17th June.
