Media & Elections Workshops in Nigeria

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Nigeria in collaboration with European Centre for Electoral Support (ECES) with funding from the European Union (EU) conducted two (2) customized 5-day workshops on Media and Elections using Bridge Curriculum at Chilla Luxury Suites, Audu Bako way, Kano state –Nigeria from 22nd to 27th July, 2018.

Each workshop (A &B) had 26 and 25 participants respectively comprising of 35 males and 17 females. Majority of the participants were Publicity Officers drawn from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria, others were drawn from the Voter Education and Publicity Department of the Commission’s Headquarters, Abuja.

The Workshops were led by one fully accredited facilitator, Joachim Baggnan and fully accredited local facilitator, Jide Ojo and four other local fully accredited facilitators from the Independent National Electoral Commission – Aliyu M. Bello, Chukwuemeka Ugboaja, Sylvanus Yepe, and Sunny Ezuma.

The aim of thee workshop was to sharpen the knowledge and communication skills of the Public Affairs Officers to enable them deliver the Commission’s communication and media policies towards the 2019 general elections. The workshop was highly practical and interactive and engaged participants on a number of topics that are very relevant to their jobs, such as the importance of Media in Democracy, The Role of Media in Elections, The EMB and the Media, Balanced News Coverage, Press Conference and Briefing, Building and Implementing a Communication Plan, Defamation, Hate and Inflammatory Speech amongst other topics.
