Political Financing modular workshop in Ukraine
On April 25-27, 2023, IFES, in cooperation with the Central Election Commission (CEC), the National Agency on Corruption Prevention (NACP), and IFES-CEC Training Center, conducted a modular workshop on Political Financing.
The event gathered 25 participants, including representatives from the CEC Secretariat, NACP staff, political parties, civil society organizations, and academicians. The interactive workshop aimed to strengthen participants’ understanding of key political finance aspects, including limits on donations and spending, reporting and effective sanctioning, as well as compliance with international standards and good practices in the field of political finance. These topics are timely and incredibly relevant given that financial reporting by political parties in Ukraine has been suspended for the last three years due to the COVID-19 quarantine restrictions and under the current martial law. Restoring political finance reporting is being actively discussed at the national level as a critical prerequisite for Ukraine’s European aspirations.
The workshop was held in Ukrainian language and was facilitated by BRIDGE Accrediting facilitators Evgeniy Krikopolo and Alona Sheshenia together with three TTF Completed facilitators Tetiana Buchynska, Yuliia Zaltsberh, and Oleh Pavlovych.
Participants throughout the workshop expressed interest and actively engaged in all activities.
“The training was useful for me in my current party finances analyst role. It was a real source of international best practices and a floor for exchanging opinions among various organizations,” – said Victoria Maksymova from NGO “Chesno.”
“During the workshop, we used the chance to develop and review financial reports and other relevant materials required from political parties. We discussed money in politics from different perspectives”, – noted university professor Bohdan Mohonchuk.
