BRIDGE Modular Workshop on Introduction to Electoral Admistration

The UN integrated Elecotral Asistance team, led by the UN Mission to South Sudan (UNMISS), implemented a three-day BRIDGE Introduction to Electoral Administration workshop for several key election stakeholders in Bor, the capital of Jonglei State in South Sudan. The overarching goal of this modular workshop was to strengthen the capacity of members of the National Elections Commission, CSOs, media, and other stakeholders in the execution of their respective roles during the electoral process.

The workshop was conducted by three BRIDGE facilitators from the continent, Aiah Mattia, Cherer Shaffo, and Utloile Silaigwana, and took place from 29-31 May 2024, attracting a total of 27 participants (9 women and 18 men) representing various stakeholders.

 The workshop aimed to enhance understanding of key electoral standards, principles, and management techniques. The objectives included:

– Exploring electoral standards and international obligations.

– Understanding the legal framework in the electoral context.

– Learning the main principles of electoral system design.

– Examining various EMB models and their functions.

– Promoting equal access to electoral processes.

– Introducing electoral operational planning methodologies.

– Discussing the importance of voter and civic education programmes.

The BRIDGE workshop was one of a series of workshops being implemented throughout South Sudan, which has received highly positive feedback from participants. The Bor attendees praised the training for its structured and systematic approach, which helped them gain a comprehensive understanding of complex electoral processes. The interactive nature of the workshop, including group work and presentations, was highlighted for keeping participants engaged, enhancing knowledge retention, and fostering a collaborative learning environment. Participants valued the opportunity to engage in discussions and share experiences, which enriched their professional development. The facilitators were also commended for delivering a well-organized and engaging programme.

The Bor Workshop concluded with a closing ceremony led by Geetha Pious, Head of the UNMISS Field Office in Jonglei and the Greater Pibor Administrative Area. In her remarks, Pious emphasized the critical role of workshops like BRIDGE in strengthening the capacities of key election stakeholders in South Sudan. She highlighted how such training programmes are essential for ensuring the effectiveness and efficiency of electoral processes in a given country. Additionally, in presenting the participants with certificates of completion for the modular workshop, Pious recognized their commitment to enhancing their professional skills and knowledge in electoral management.
