BRIDGE Workshop for Melanesia Election Management Bodies

4-6 December 2024

Vanuatu

The third PIANZEA-UNDP led, sub-regional BRIDGE Introduction to Electoral Administration module workshops for 2024 concluded successfully in Port Vila in Early December.

The series began in February with a workshop for Micronesian election management bodies (EMBs), followed by the Polynesian-focused EMBs in November, and ended with this final session for Melanesian EMBs from 4 to 6 December 2024.

The BRIDGE foundational module brought together twenty-eight electoral officials from Melanesian EMBs and partner organisations, reinforcing the significance of foundational electoral principles and processes at the sub-regional level.

The three-day workshop provided participants with valuable insights into electoral processes, emphasising inclusivity, security, and operational planning. Key topics included mechanisms to enhance youth and women’s participation, accommodating people with disabilities, and improving voter education and civic engagement. Country presentations showcased various EMB structures, strategies, and challenges, fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing.

The sessions underscored the importance of engaging stakeholders, addressing misinformation, and strengthening election security.

While the workshop was highly informative, participants suggested extending the duration of sessions and incorporating region-specific examples for improved engagement.

Overall, the programme was assessed positively for its relevance, practical focus, and potential to enhance EMB practices in participants’ respective countries.

At the conclusion of the workshop, participants bid farewell by exchanging contact details, a positive indication that the event successfully achieved its objectives and established strong networks that will endure for years to come. Notably, the workshop also celebrated a significant milestone: one of the TTF Complete facilitators, Ms. Joy Manu from the Solomon Islands Electoral Commission, was accredited as a Workshop Facilitator.
